“Reveries” Exhibition – Portraits in a City

Reveries is a photographic portrait of Montreal and its people shot on classic analog film. The exhibition featured nineteen black and white prints and was held in 2018 at Montreal’s legendary artisan brewery Le Cheval blanc.

Far from a factual record of our time, this collection of ready-made memories was assembled during countless wanderings in the heart of a fleeting city.

The series borrows from the visual language of the photo reportage, but isn’t set in a precise timeline or linked to a particular event.

Exposition Rêveries — “Rêveries” exhibition — Rico Michel’s analog photography exhibition *Reveries* was held in 2018 at Montreal’s legendary artisan brewery Le Cheval blanc.

“I sometimes wonder if these images aren’t dreams I made in a moment of reverie. At first, the vistas are fresh in memory, but after a time the details of their exact provenance begin to fade. I wouldn’t be surprised if one day I find myself wondering if it really was me who took them.

That’s because these images with whom I share my daily life now want to be seen, they are demanding an existence of their own. As I’m not such a controlling person, I let them do as they please while I attend to my daily preoccupations.

And then one day, there they are, peeking from under a pile of unclassified papers. In this moment, having forgotten all about my creative anxieties, I finally see them for the first time. Their raison d’être then becomes apparent: they are a wordless dialogue, the echoes of a conversation I’m having with the world.

I can now leave you with them. If, after a day or two, one of them pops to your mind, it’ll mean that you have made it yours, and that this conversation will not have been only with myself.”
